Deidre is seen walking all over Wailuku, and always in a cute outfit! Today I ran into her with a cute top paired with a pencil skirt, an adorable purse, and HEELS! Yes gals, she walks all over Wailuku in heels! Why? Because she says its a great workout for her calves :) Read on and Deidre will surely inspire you to choose to walk too!

    Walker: Deidre Tegarden
    Profession: Governor’s Representative – Maui

    Why do you walk?

It is healthy and it’s a great way to see friends and find out what is happening in town. I always run into someone I know.

    Where do you walk?
In Wailuku and in Kihei (with my husband and our dog)

How do you prepare for walking during your busy schedule?

By not bringing lunch to work. By the time 12 noon rolls around I am so hungry I have no choice but to walk to one of Wailuku’s tasty restaurants – this stimulates the economy, too.

What’s your favorite thing about walking?
Feeling the fresh air on my skin and seeing friends.

People wear heels to work and use that as their excuse for driving…what suggestions do you have for them?
Fiddle faddle. I walk in my heels all the time – it is great exercise for your calves.

Any other suggestions do you for people who want to make walking a part of their daily routine?
Bring a comfortable pair of shoes to work and leave them in your office so when the walking mood strikes, you can indulge.

What would make walking easier for you?
More sidewalks would be great, but having to negotiate the tough terrain on Vineyard Street is fun- you feel like an explorer.

We just got these great, light sweaters. Tie dye is always cool and can spice up an outfit. Wear this one 4 ways!
    1. Wear it simple and long.
    2. Tie it neatly in the back
    3. Wear it as a bohemian looking wrap.
    4. It’s cute when its tied to the side too!

For every kid growing up in central Maui, Tom’s Mini Mart in Paukukalo holds a special place in their heart. It’s where you go as a kid on a hot day, it’s where you take your college friends when they come to visit you during summers on Maui, it’s where, on very special days, our soccer coach would end practice early and treat the whole team to shave ice, it’s the stop on the way home from surfing. I’d always order the bowl, and it would always be too big to finish. Like every other local clan of kids, my friends and I would order our shave ice and sit on the rock wall to eat it. (You know…the rock wall that everyone sits on to eat their Tom’s shave ice while friends and family drive past and honk their horns.)

Tom’s was the shave ice champion on the island. No other place came close. No question. And then Ululani’s opened in Kahului…

It’s a small place, just 2 gals working the counter. I had heard amazing reviews from friends and had seen stellar, and I mean STELLAR reviews on yelp. Their ice was supposedly very fine and their syrup not too sweet. I was skeptical as I stood in line. Could something be better than Tom’s? I glanced at the flavor menu, and nothing popped out at me. They didn’t have the usual dreamsicle and cream soda flavors I would get at Tom’s. Hhhhmmm. Strike 1. I look on and I see that they have free li hing mui powder. Interesting. But I’m still not sold on the idea. As I step to the counter, I decide on melona and lilikoi with ice cream and mochi balls (I figured I have to try everything to get the feel for this place). I watch the gals make it and they recognize me from Maui Thing…they’re sweet and rave about our cute clothes. Of course, this gets me. Their customer service is unreal :) Then as they make my shave ice, they don’t put any cheap ice cream at the bottom, they use Roselani, my favorite. After the actual ice shaving occurs, they proceed to poke holes in the mound of ice for the syrup to seep into! Simply genius! I’m officially impressed and haven’t even tasted it yet. I get my shave ice, already in a pretty good mood, and I like it. The ice is fine, maybe too fine, almost slushy status. But their syrup…oh it’s good. It isn’t too sweet and they don’t over, or under-do it. Ululani’s doesn’t even give you a straw. This is how confident they are in their syrup rationing.

So for straight up shave ice, I was rather impressed with the new guys in town. It was a great experience, fabulous customer service, quality shave ice. I’m sure to be a return customer! But that’s not to say I won’t return to Tom’s. Tom’s is much more than just shave ice. It’s memories, it’s fun and it’s tradition. It’s an entire place full of great food…musubi, ono hot dogs, and the best boiled peanuts!

A note to Ululani’s: your mannequins need bottoms!

Let’s work on reducing Maui’s carbon footprint! Instead of driving, plan ahead to walk. Bring a pair of sneakers to work, a bottle of water, and maybe some sunscreen :) Wherever you are, take some fun photos with your phone while you’re walking and upload them to our Maui Thing Facebook fan page! The best photo each month will get a free tee! Here’s my first “Walking Wailuku” photo…

I get tired of doing solid colors and I find that I always choose the same colors, my favorites! So I found an easy way to spice up new colors! Its the easiest thing and can be done in so many variations. Have fun!

    You will need:
    - Nail polish (a light or pastel color works best)
    - Rubbing alcohol (vodka works too!)
    - Newspaper (rip or cut into strips)
    - Top coat

    1. Paint nails. Let dry completely.
    2. Dip nail into alcohol.

    3. Press newspaper strip onto nail. Hold for 30 seconds making sure not to move it.
    4. Paint over with top coat
    * Make sure to do the newspaper print THEN top coat. Newspaper print won’t work over top coat.

Karey Oura-Kapoi, 37 year old mother and wife is not only a cute chick, she is also smart, personable and motivated. Tons of assets, so what’s the problem? None really because she could give a rip about how she looks. She doesn’t wear a bit of make-up, wears pants 2 sizes too big and styles herself with only the intent of covering her body because it’s a legal necessity. Lucky girl, she can actually pull this off because of her naturally good looks. So you may ask “Why does Karey need a make-over, if she’s fine with the way she looks?” Well because her mother said so. Yes we’re doing this for Karey’s mom, Karen who knows that Karey can do better and should present herself to her fullest potential. Thus “The KEEP KAREY KURRENT” project.

We believe that any make-over is about enhancing an individuals positive qualities inside and out. Not changing the person. So first we need to dig deep and find out what make’s Karey tick. Here’s her profile:

    AGE: 37
STATUS: Married with son Ryder age, 4
WORK: Employee at Maui Memorial Medical Center, Owner of Island Soul Entertainment
LIKES: Softball, beer, good food, beer, good music, beer, family, beer, projects that don’t make money and beer.
DISLIKES: Hardballs, incompetence, wasted time, laziness, nice shoes, her post baby physic
HOBBIES: Work, volunteering, projects that don’t make money and beer.
LIFESTYLE: Overall Karey is an extremely active individual who is constantly challenging herself with ways to do better in the community and for the community. Besides her work she is a devoted mother, wife and daughter who tries to balance all of her successes while keeping family a priority. She does not have the time or desire to concentrate on her physical presentation. Low-maintenance, comfort and practicality are necessary functions for her lifestyle.

    OUR GOAL:
Overall haul Karey’s style so that it speaks to her tomboy nature while at the same time representing her as a successful and motivated professional. Shift her busy lifestyle habits of junk food and token workouts to a daily regiment of healthier eating and consistent exercise.
